PALM BAY, Fla. — A man in his 20s was critically wounded Thursday after a fight on the Palm Bay Campus of Eastern Florida State College, authorities say.
Two men were beating up a third at about 1:50 p.m. ET when the man being beaten retreated to his car to grab a gun, Palm Bay Police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said. As he continued to be hit, he fired his gun, hitting one of his attackers, witnesses told police.
That man, whose name has not been released, was shot in the chest, according to college spokesman John Glisch.
He was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in nearby Melbourne, Fla., according to Lee Nessel, Brevard County Fire Rescue spokeswoman.
The shooter was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered during the fight, Martinez said. Police are questioning the third man and did not yet know whether they were students or what the trio was fighting about.
Palm Bay police are on the scene and the situation is contained. The campus is on lockdown, and all classes have been canceled for the rest of the day.
