Grimes campaign sues state GOP over mailings - Kansas City Star

Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes' U.S. Senate campaign filed a lawsuit on Friday accusing the Kentucky Republican Party of sending out flyers aimed at suppressing voter turnout next Tuesday.

The suit filed in Franklin Circuit Court in Frankfort requested an injunction to block further distribution of the flyers.

Grimes' campaign also said it will ask authorities to investigate whether the flyers circulated in several counties violated Kentucky and federal laws.

The mailer was labeled as an "Election Violation Notice" and warned recipients they're at risk of "acting on fraudulent information." Grimes' campaign said it was designed to look like an official government document.

The mailer said Grimes has tried to deceive voters in her campaign to unseat Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Grimes campaign manager Jonathan Hurst said the flyers were authorized by McConnell in an effort "to intimidate Kentuckians and prevent them from exercising their right to vote."

Grimes' campaign said a court hearing on the request for an injunction was scheduled for Monday, the day before the election.

State GOP spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper said the flyers hold Grimes accountable for her "blatant falsehoods."

McConnell campaign spokeswoman Allison Moore said the Grimes campaign was trying to stop the state GOP "from correcting the record." Moore said Grimes' campaign had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars "defaming" McConnell and his wife, former U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine Chao.

Moore also accused Democrats of trying to "sow racial division among Kentuckians with false information." She said Democrats were behind a mailer targeting black voters and claiming McConnell was leading an effort to take away voting rights.
