A huge weather system packing gusting winds, thunderstorms, snow and perhaps even twisters is threatening to put a damper on millions of Americans' holiday travel plans. Significant road and air travel delays are expected across the East Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday courtesy of a messy mix of rain, wind, clouds and fog, according to forecasters.
More than 300 flights were delayed or scrapped because of the weather early Tuesday, according to FlightAware. Delays of two hours were reported at Philadelphia International and one hour at LaGuardia in New York.
"The Gulf Coast will see the worst of the severe weather on Tuesday, with thunderstorms, as much as 3 to 5 inches of rain and damaging winds right across Louisiana and into southern Georgia and northern Florida," The Weather Channel's lead meteorologist Roy Lucksinger said. "The conditions are right for possible isolated tornadoes, too."
The huge system will pivot northeast Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds along the East Coast and wind and snow showers to the Great Lakes and middle Mississippi Valley. Chicago and Milwaukee could see "significant" snowfall towards the end of Christmas Eve, Lucksinger said. "At the moment the system could just clip Chicago on Christmas Eve with potentially heavy snow that would certainly disrupt flights," Lucksinger added. Meanwhile, a separate storm arriving in the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday is set to bring rain before moving across the Rockies. Salt Lake City could see up to eight inches of snow on Christmas Day.
