A two-year-old child fatally shot his mother at an Idaho Walmart after the toddler reached into the woman's purse and discharged a concealed weapon, police said.
"A tragic, tragic accident," Kootenai sheriff's Lt. Stu Miller told reporters after the 10:20 a.m. killing in the store in Hayden, about 40 miles east of Spokane. The woman was not identified. Deputies said they believe the two-year-old reached into his mother's purse and grabbed a handgun, which then went off and fatally shot her, NBC station KHQ reported.
The woman had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, Miller said. "Instances like this, you know I'm a big proponent of a concealed weapon for your own safety. However, you have to be responsible. Unfortunately, in this case, that just wasn't," Miller told the station.
Walmart said in a statement to KHQ that, "A very sad incident occurred at our store today involving the death of a female customer. We are fully cooperating with the Kootenai County Sheriff's deputies as they investigate this matter."
