military carries out operation against the Shabab in Somalia - Los Angeles Times

The U.S. military conducted an operation in Somalia against the Shabab militant group, the Pentagon said late Monday.

The disclosure of the operation against the organization, which is affiliated with Al Qaeda, came in a statement from Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John F. Kirby.

"We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information as and when appropriate," he said.

No details were given about how the mission was carried out or what military services were involved, but there had been media reports of a drone strike in Somalia earlier in the day.

Al Shabab has claimed responsibility for several attacks along Kenya's tourist coast in recent months that have killed dozens of people. It was responsible for last year's attack on an upscale mall in Nairobi that left almost 70 people dead.

In October, Navy SEALs raided the house of a Shabab leader, Abdulkadir Mohamed Abdulkadir, also known as Ikrima, in Baraawe, south of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. The raid wasn't successful, but it underscored American willingness to send troops into a hostile environment to go after the Shabab's top leadership.
