FedEx Facility Shooting Prompts Massive Response, Shooter Found Dead - NBCNews.com

A gunman injured six people at a Georgia FedEx facility early Tuesday before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

The male suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and was found inside the FedEx facility's loading dock, reported NBC affiliate WXIA-TV.

“We are confirming that the suspect in this case is deceased from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound,” said Cobb County police spokesman Mike Bowman.

He added that officers were still “sweeping” the area around the Kennesaw, Ga., building Tuesday morning.

Police were first called to the scene at 5:44 a.m., prompting a lockdown of the facility on Airport Road and more than 50 emergency vehicles to rush to the scene.

One witness described how the gunman, who may have been a baggage handler, opened fire on a security guard and other employees.

“He was an employee, and apparently not a disgruntled employee,” the witness told WXIA.

The injured were taken to the hospital, and the security guard was in critical condition and brought immediately to the operating room, WXIA reported.

FedEx confirmed there is an incident at its facility, located about 27 miles north of Atlanta. The building is fenced-in and not open to the public.

“FedEx is aware of the situation,” spokesman Scott Fiedler said in a statement. “Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of our team members, first responders and others affected. FedEx is cooperating with authorities.”
