Today should have been a day of rehashing stories from a fun-filled junior prom and uploading hundreds of Facebook photos. Instead, the students of Jonathan Law High School are left stunned over the tragic death of a classmate stabbed to death in the school halls.
Maren Sanchez, 16, had her blue prom dress picked out. Her nails were done. Her new boyfriend would be her date. She was excited for her junior prom.
"We were just laughing, talking about what we were going to do when we got there, how many pictures we were going to take," said Sanchez's friend, Imani Langston said of the night before prom.
But on the day of prom, Sanchez was stabbed in school by a classmate, reportedly because she turned down his invitation to the prom.
The school was put on lockdown and the dance was postponed indefinitely. Students instead gathered for a candlelight vigil, with counselors on hand for anyone who needed them.
Sanchez was an honor student who was active in her drama group. She was a singer and performed "Home" by Phillip Phillips at a school talent show last school year. Another video on her YouTube channel showcases her sense of humor in a class project on "The Roaring Twenties."
She served as a student manager for several sports teams, played paintball and enjoyed photography, New Haven Register reports.
"Maren should be celebrating at her prom this evening with her friends and classmates," Sanchez's cousin Edward Kovac told the New Haven Register, adding she was a "bright light full of hopes and dreams."
"Instead, we are mourning her death and we are trying to understand this senseless loss of life."
Attorney Richard Meehan, the lawyer for the teenager charged with Sanchez's murder, said Saturday that the 16-year-old suspect is under psychological evaluation and will likely remain in a medical facility for two weeks. He says the boy won't appear at an arraignment scheduled for Monday in New Haven. He was charged as a juvenile but could be charged later as an adult.
