Chicago weather: Blizzard, winter storm warnings issued for Chicago area - WLS-TV

CHICAGO (WLS) --

A storm bringing possible blizzard-like conditions may dump more than a foot of snow throughout the area Sunday.

ABC7 Meteorologist Troy Christensen expects conditions to deteriorate throughout the day, making travel the most difficult later in the afternoon as a result of blowing and drifting snow.

The following counties also face a winter storm warning:

INDIANA

WISCONSIN

Jefferson; Rock; Walworth and Waukesha counties until midnight Monday.

Temperatures are also expected to drop throughout the day, making lighter, fluffier snow later that will contribute to blowing conditions Sunday afternoon.

The weather is not welcome news to many travelers, as many flights have been cancelled at local airports due to weather. As of 6 a.m. Sunday, over 900 flights were cancelled at O'Hare and 180 at Midway.

Snow plows are continuing to clear and salt streets in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Plows were also out overnight Saturday clearing main thoroughfares because temperatures were close to freezing.

"We have 280 plows out right now, those plows are focusing on the main streets and Lake Shore Drive," said Molly Poppe, Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation spokesperson. "We've noticed the snow is breaking down nicely for us. As we continue to work through the day we will see possibly heavier snow falls, so our big concern is just making sure that residents are driving according to conditions and safely."

Some returned to the cars early, allowing time to clear their vehicles before heading out.

"Snow should be coming down, which it is, so I expect it to be probably thicker than this by Monday or Tuesday," said Donnie McGee, a Chicago driver.
