Law enforcement sources in the case of a black man found hanging from a tree in Mississippi suggest that suicide may be the cause of death, instead of foul play. The man, identified as Otis Byrd, was found hanging after he was reported missing earlier this month.
An FBI agent investigating the case said Friday afternoon that they wouldn’t be publicly discussing cause of death yet. He said, “Everyone wants answers, and they want those quickly, we understand that. We are going to hold off on coming to any conclusions until the facts take us to a definitive answer.”
However, law enforcement sources have told both The L.A. Times and CNN that the preliminary autopsy results suggest it was suicide.
The results of the full autopsy will be available next week.
Sheriff Marvin Lucas said they found a bedsheet wrapped around Byrd’s neck, but no other signs of being bound or gagged or injured. The investigation, however, is still underway.
