Richard White, 63, died Saturday after a Jefferson Parrish deputy shot him three times for charging through security at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on Friday night with a machete and a bag full of gas bombs, officials said.
The man who stormed security with a machete at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport died Saturday afternoon in a local hospital where he was taken after a deputy shot him three times.
Richard White, 63, was wounded during Friday night's terrifying ordeal. He had been unconscious and unable to speak with investigators, Jefferson Parrish Sheriff Newell Normand said at a press conference.
White had also carried a bag filled with Molotov cocktails and smoke bombs, Normand said. Sheriff's Deputy Lt. Heather Slyve was being hailed as a hero for firing three rounds at the deranged man as the terminal erupted in chaos. One bullet grazed the arm of TSA agent Carroll Richel, but she was not seriously hurt.

Normand said White has mental health issues, according to his wife. He was a Jehovah's Witness and his family has refused certain types of medical treatment in accordance with their religion, the sheriff said.
Authorities say they do not know why White went berserk and charged security. Bystanders suffered minor injuries, mostly from falling or diving under furniture.
Richel shows the gunshot wound to the arm she suffered as she was chased by a machete-wielding man at the Concourse B security checkpoint Friday night at the airport.
White also carried a bag through security, which he dropped, Normand said Saturday. Deputies later found it near the X-ray station. Inside were six Mason jars filled with gasoline and containing wicks, as well as smoke bombs and a barbecue lighter.
Normand said the suspect's wife has been extremely cooperative.

"We very much want the opportunity to talk to him. We're not sure that's actually going to happen," he had said before White died.
Logan Tucker, 26, of Meridian, Miss., and Phillip Green, 33, of Houston, both dockhands on a tugboat headed to Houston for work, said they were about 25 yards from where the incident unfolded. "I heard the gunshots," Tucker said.
"It was pandemonium after that," said Green. "I took cover. I didn't want to become part of the story."
The airport was open and operating as usual on Saturday.
