She said: “He had caring responsibilities outside of school. He was the oldest of a number of siblings.

"By the time he got into the sixth-form he, to all intents and purposes, was a hardworking aspirational young man who went on to the university that he wanted to go to."

Another former teacher has previously revealed Emwazi received anger management therapy at Quintin Kynaston.

The unnamed teacher told BBC's Newsnight that Emwazi was involved in a number of fights in his first year and needed help controlling his emotions.

Last week the Telegraph disclosed that a second Islamist student from Quintin Kynaston had died fighting with terrorists abroad.

Choukri Ellekhlifi, a contemporary of Jihadi John, was killed in Syria in 2013 after joining up with an al-Qaeda terror group.

A third pupil at the school, Mohammed Sakr, also died fighting for al-Shabaab , an affiliate of al-Qaeda, in Somalia.

On Saturday night the Government announced a review into what measures had been put in place at Quintin Kynaston to tackle the radicalisation of Muslim teenagers.

Yet Mrs Shuter, who left the school in 2013 after being found guilty of using school funds “inappropriately”, denied staff had any idea that Emwazi or any other students were being radicalised.

She said: "I am not prepared to say when the radicalisation took place. All I can say is absolutely hand on heart, we had no knowledge of it. If we had we would have done something about it.

"I was a secular Jewish head in a 70% Muslim school. It was a very interesting dynamic that was set up and it enabled us to have conversations that I think were really relevant.

"There was never any sense that any of these young men as I knew them were radicalised when they were in school."

Ms Shuter added: "I can't even begin to say the shock and the horror that I feel. Even now when I'm listening to the news and I hear his name I feel the skin on the back of my neck stand up because it is just so far from what I knew of him and it is so shocking and so horrendous the things that he has done."
