Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday he will take a break from this week's "intensive" nuclear talks with Iran to discuss progress towards a deal with European allies.

"We made a lot of progress," he told reporters outside a restaurant in Lausanne, Switzerland. "We are recessing the talks."

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said Kerry would meet his German, British and French counterparts in Europe on Saturday before flying to Washington.

"We've had a series of intensive discussions with Iran this week, and given where we are in the negotiations, it's an important time for high-level consultations with our partners in these talks," she explained, adding that talks would resume in Switzerland next week.

Separately, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran's talks with the six major powers would resume on Wednesday, Iran's ISNA news agency said, according to Reuters.
