As the newly minted — and only — declared candidate for president in 2016, Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, has been a popular television guest in the last 24 hours.
He spent Monday night with Sean Hannity on Fox News, in a mostly friendly, hourlong chat about his family and his economic proposals (including the penny plan, a possible campaign catchphrase).
Mr. Cruz appeared on âThis Morningâ on CBS on Tuesday, and talked about repealing the Affordable Care Act and the fight against ISIS in the Middle East.
But on âTodayâ on NBC, broadcast at the same time Tuesday morning as his âThis Morningâ appearance, he was joined by his wife, Heidi. In a five-minute interview with Matt Lauer, Mrs. Cruz was heard from only twice, once echoing her husband’s truth teller message, and then about whether she was ready for the public scrutiny that comes with a campaign.
“Well, sure Matt, I think any time that you embark upon something that is so much bigger than yourself and your own family, I donât know that you ever feel fully prepared,” she said. “But we have an incredibly strong marriage and strong family and are guided by our faith.”
A former campaign aide and adviser in Washington, Mrs. Cruz is no stranger to the spotlight of elections. Our colleague Ashley Parker sat down with Mrs. Cruz in 2013 to talk about her career, her marriage and her political views, including whether she could see herself as first lady.
âUm, I donât think I should answer that,â she said at the time.
