• 3.0 inches in Walpole and Norwell;

• 2.8 inches in Hopkinton, Marlborough, and Norwood;

• 2.7 inches in Taunton.

The fast-moving storm is expected to dump up to 8 inches of heavy, wet snow in some areas, the weather service said. Boston is expected to receive 3 to 5 inches, forecasters said.

The blanket of snow is expected to be thickest in Central Massachusetts, with amounts tapering to both east and west. Areas right along the coast and much of Southeastern Massachusetts will get less snow, forecasters said.

Forecasters issued a winter storm warning for a large swath of the state, effective until 7 p.m. Saturday.

Snow in those areas began early Saturday — and it could mix with freezing rain, sleet, and rain before returning to snow in the evening, forecasters said.

The weather service warned that the snow could bring down tree branches and wires, leading to power outages. People are advised to stay at home, as roads are hazardous and visibility is limited.
