Obama Says US Ready to Turn Up Pressure on Russia Over Ukraine - Businessweek

President Barack Obama said the U.S. will keep increasing economic pressure on Russia over its actions in Ukraine and is ready to pursue all available options short of military confrontation.

Obama said the alliance of the U.S. and European governments must remain unified in the wake of the latest break in the cease-fire between Russian-backed rebels and the government of Ukraine.

“We have no interest in seeing Russia weakened or its economy in shambles,” Obama said at a news conference in New Delhi with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We have a profound interest, as I believe every country does, in promoting a core principle which is large countries don’t bully small countries.”

He said confronting Russia militarily won’t be effective.

Pro-Russian rebels have mounted a new offensive across the country’s easternmost regions with rocket attacks on strategic port city of Mariupol.

The rise in the violence has prompted renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, which has brought tensions between Russia and its Cold War-era foes to their highest pitch since the fall of communism a quarter century ago.
