Millions across the Northeast woke up to a blanket of white Saturday morning after an overnight storm, which was expected to last through the day, dropped several inches of snow in some parts. The "front-end" of the storm had already delivered more than 5 inches of powder in areas of Connecticut and New Jersey, and more than 4 inches in New York City, according to Weather.com. Parts of northern New York saw up to 8 inches, NBC New York reported. Those areas could expect rain in the afternoon, making for extra slushy conditions before another sprinkling of snow later in the day, Weather.com said. Forecasters warned that "a few localized areas may end up with far more snow" than expected, depending on temperature and pressure differences.
Later Saturday into Sunday, the brunt of the storm is expected to bring between 6 to 10 inches of snow to parts of northern New England, including Providence, Rhode Island, Boston, and Portland, Maine, according to the National Weather Service. Those areas can also expect to be hit with gusty winds. But the Northeast won't be out of the woods once the weekend is over, said meteorologist Michael Palmer. A second storm Monday is set to bring more heavy snow to northern Virginia through southern New England.
