Israel Shells Lebanon After Military Vehicle Attacked Near Border: Report - NBCNews.com

Israel reportedly fired artillery shells into Lebanon, security officials said Wednesday after an Israeli military vehicle was hit by an anti-tank missile in what appeared to be a significant escalation in border violence.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

Lebanese officials said the shelling targeted the border villages of Majidiyeh, Abbasiyeh and Kfar Chouba near the Shebaa Farms area, according to The Associated Press.

IDF spokesman Peter Lerner said a vehicle was "attacked with anti-tank missiles on Mt. Dov, near Rajar" and said civilians were being evacuated from from Mt. Hermon "following mortar fire at military positions in the area."

The skirmish came after Israel launched airstrikes earlier Wednesday targeting Syrian army artillery posts in response to rockets fired the previous day into the Israeli-held Golan Heights.
