Federal investigators have recommended charging retired Gen. David Petraeus with leaking classified information to his mistress, according to a new report.

The once-revered military man and ex- CIA director allowed his former flame, Paula Broadwell, access to his classified email account and other information, according to The New York Times.

Petraeus insisted that he never let Broadwell — who wrote a biography of him, “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus” — access to secret info.

It now falls to Attorney General Eric Holder to decide whether to accept prosecutors’ recommendation and indict the retired four-star general who commanded forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

His stunning downfall occurred in 2012, when it was revealed Broadwell, an Army Reserve officer, had been “embedded” with Petraeus.

The affair came to light after Jill Kelley — a Tampa socialite well known in military circles — complained to the FBI that she received anonymous threatening emails alleging she too was sleeping with Petraeus.

That spurred an investigation that traced the email to Broadwell, who was married to a North Carolina doctor with whom she had two sons.

Petraeus resigned in Nov. 2012 and admitted the affair.

“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment,” he said.

Since his fall from grace Petraeus has taught college courses, toured the lecture circuit and worked at a private-equity firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.

President Obama has said he hopes hope the downfall will be a minor endnote on an otherwise exemplary career.
