A man believed to be armed and distraught over his son's medical condition barricaded himself and a likely family member inside a Tomball hospital room Saturday night, authorities said.
The man, believed to be the father of a patient, was suspected to be armed with a gun at Tomball Regional Medical Center, said Tomball Police Department detective James Harral.
"At this time, they are negotiating with him for a peaceful surrender," Harral said late Saturday.
As of 9:30 p.m., no one was hurt, but areas adjacent to the patient's room were evacuated, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
A hostage negotiator with the sheriff's high risk operation unit and the Tomball Police Deapartment were at the scene at 605 Holderrieth Blvd. More than a dozen officers and the Texas Rangers were on hand.
Lauren Stucky, who has a family member admitted in the hospital, waited in her car outside the building after police told her she could not come inside.
"It's a scary situation because I have a family member in there, and I can't see them," she said. "It's a little stressful because no one really can tell us what's going on, but I'm hoping it's resolved soon for everyone's sake."
Tomball Regional Medical Center, established in 1976, sits on a 150-acre campus with 358 licensed beds, including intensive care units. The hospital has a cancer treatment center and other speciality centers.
