Prince William, Kate get gifts, greetings from LeBron, Beyonce, Jay Z - Los Angeles Times

British royalty meets American royalty! Prince William and wife Catherine hobnobbed with LeBron James, Beyonce and Jay Z on Monday night in the good old U.S. of A.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took in their first NBA game, a matchup between King James' Cleveland Cavaliers and the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, during the first full day of their official New York visit.

The game was part of the Royal Foundation's United for Wildlife charity event, and the royals attended a dinner at Barclays Center prior to the contest. Later, they launched a collaboration involving the charity, London's Coach Core program and the NBA. They also met with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and retired player and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo, who serves as a United for Wildlife ambassador.

Although the two couples weren't seated together, rapper-entrepreneur Jay Z, who used to own a tiny slice of the Nets and regularly attends games, and wife Beyonce greeted the royal couple during halftime.

James and the Cavs beat the Nets, 110-99, and after the victory, a sweaty No. 23 presented the couple with cupcakes from his hometown of Akron, Ohio, and a gift for their son, Prince George, who is back home in Britain during his parents' stateside stopover.

James, 29, gave them a tiny wine-colored Cavaliers jersey emblazoned with "George 1," and a gold adult-sized version that read "Cambridge 7."

The royal trio also posed for a photo, and the 6-foot-8 baller put his arm around the flustered duchess -- a breach of royal etiquette, according to the Daily Mail. (The site also revisited First Lady Michelle Obama's similar faux pas when she greeted Queen Elizabeth II at a 2009 G-20 reception at Buckingham Palace.)

The pregnant royal reportedly erupted into a fit of giggles and raked her fingers through her hair before regaining her composure. Prince William then joked with James about his shoe size being "half the size of yours."

"Wow what an Honor! This game has brought me so much and I'll never take it for granted! The King, "Duke & Duchess. #Royalty #StriveForGreatness #RWTW #LRMR #Klutch," the basketball star later wrote on Instagram.

Earlier that day, Prince William took a day trip to Washington, where he met with President Obama and gave a speech at the World Bank. Catherine visited the Northside Center for Child Development in Harlem and wrapped presents with volunteers. Some of the children at the event said they thought that they were meeting Queen Elsa from Disney's animated film "Frozen."

Later, William and Catherine reconvened at a conservation reception co-hosted by the Royal Foundation and the Clinton Foundation at the British Consul General's residence. There they met with former first lady and onetime Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

On Tuesday morning, the couple visited the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan. William is also scheduled to visit the Empire State Building, and the couple is set to cap off the trip with the University of St. Andrews' 600th Anniversary Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
