Best Applause Line: “I’m giving up The New York Times for Lent.”

Crickets: Few, although some when he said: “I’ll take my chances on me. I’ve done pretty well so far.”

Red Meat: Tossup between describing himself as “pro-life” more than a dozen times and criticism of media elites.

Toughest Question: The conservative radio host Laura Ingraham asked Mr. Christie about his telling people to “sit down and shut up.” Answer: “Some people need to be told to sit down and shut up.”

Entrance Song: “Enter Sandman” by Metallica.

Mood in the Room: Engaged but not effusive. While the seated interview arrangement with Ms. Ingraham created a cozy, television-studio setting for Mr. Christie, it created a wall between him and the crowd. He seemed like a former rock star doing a reunion tour, as opposed to a fresh face.

He took his best shots in oblique references to Jeb Bush, highlighting his own working-class biography in implicit contrast to Mr. Bush’s background.

On how to beat Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Christie said, “I think you make sure very directly that you talk about your different vision for the United States — different than the Obama-Clinton vision for the United States.”

Mr. Christie’s most uncomfortable moment was when, asked to assess his own falling standing in the polls, he invoked surveys from February 2007 pointing to a 2008 match-up between Rudolph W. Giuliani and Mrs. Clinton, the front-runners at the time, neither of whom won a nomination. It was not exactly political patricide, but Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Christie have shared some advisers, Mr. Giuliani was one of Mr. Christie’s most prominent defenders during the George Washington Bridge scandal in 2014, and the former mayor recently described himself as Mr. Christie’s political mentor.
