After nine years together, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie finally tied the knot in France, a spokesman for the couple confirmed. However, the parents of six have long been open about the way they feel about each other and their plans to wed. Even before they got engaged in April 2012, their commitment was clear. Here are the things the newlyweds have said about marriage and their plans for a wedding.
All the Details: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Are Married
Brad Pitt Reveals His Wedding Ring!
"We don’t have a date, and we’re not hiding anything, but we really don’t know. We talk to the kids about it once in a while. ... And one of them suggested paintball. And we thought, 'Well, different,'" Jolie said during an appearance on "Good Morning America." "You know, I think the important thing is that whatever we do it’s that the kids do have a great time, and we all — you know, take seriously the love, and the connection between all of us. But also just get silly and do something memorable."
"We're still engaged. We're still thinking about it," Jolie told Elle magazine. "We plan to do it at some point. ... After all these years, we have history – and when you have history with somebody, you're friends in such a very real, deep way that there's such a comfort, and an ease, and a deep love that comes from having been through quite a lot together."
Jolie told People magazine that the couple's six kids had "hysterical" ideas of how to plan the nuptials. "[Our children] will, in a way, be the wedding planners," she said. "It's going to be Disney or paintball – one or the other!"
Pitt wasn't really into the idea of discussing marriage plans at the New York City premiere of the movie, "World War Z." According to People, when asked if there was a wedding in the works, he laughed and continued down the red carpet, ""I'm movin' on, man," he said. "I'm moving on!"
"We will someday, we will," Pitt told CBS News. "[The kids say], 'That's a great idea! Get mommy a ring!' 'Okay, I will! I will!'"
"We’d actually like to," Pitt told The Hollywood Reporter when asked if he planned to marry Jolie. "It seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot." However, when asked about Pitt's quotes a few days later, Jolie told People, "I think anything said tends to be blown out of proportion." Added Pitt: "Yeah, that was my fault."
"The kids asked me the other day and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a big cake," Jolie told ABC News. "They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies or somebody's, you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married. ... We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children ... you're committed."
"The kids are putting on the heat. They really are. They are putting on the heat," Pitt told Ellen DeGeneres. "How do you I get out of this one? Somebody help me. I don't know what the future holds."
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie declared that there was "no secret wedding" in her immediate future. "I'm not pregnant. I'm not adopting at the moment," she added for good measure.
"The kids ask about marriage. ... It's meaning more and more to them," Pitt told USA Weekend. "So it's something we've got to look at."
"[We're not] against getting married. ... It's just like we already are," Jolie told Vanity Fair. "Children are clearly a commitment, a bigger commitment [than marriage]. It's for life."
"I have love in my life, a soul mate–absolutely. When someone asked me why Angie and I don't get married, I replied, 'Maybe we'll get married when it's legal for everyone else.' I stand by that, although I took a lot of flak for saying it – hate mail from religious groups," he told Parade. "I believe everyone should have the same rights. They say gay marriage ruins families and hurts kids. Well, I've had the privilege of seeing my gay friends being parents and watching their kids grow up in a loving environment." (In 2006, Pitt famously told Esquire magazine, "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.")
"People have made a lot out of it that we're not, but we both have been married before, and it's very easy to get married, but it's not easy to build a family and be parents together," she told Vanity Fair. "Maybe we've done it backwards, but we certainly feel married."
"We're not against it. It just doesn't seem necessary. He and I have never discussed it in detail, but I would assume – because we [both] went down that road before – it's not that contract or that ceremony that makes you feel solid," Jolie told Marie Claire. "It's the hard work and the exhaustion and the children that really do make you solid."
