Making reference to the recent death of Robin Williams, she said: “First Robin, who was a genius, and now Lauren. It was my privilege to have known her, to have acted with her, and to have directed her. And, most of all, to have had her as a wise and loving friend.
“She was an original. Even with all those great films we can visit again and again, she will be missed.”
The actor Hugh Jackman tweeted a simple tribute: “Lauren Bacall … you will be missed. By me … and the entire world.”
Interviewer Larry King, who featured the actress on his show a number of times, said: “Sorry to learn of Lauren Bacall’s passing … I interviewed her a few times and we did a special at the Kennedy Center one evening. Rest in peace.”
Many tributes made reference to the screen appearance which catapulted her to fame – playing Humphrey Bogart’s romantic interest in To Have or Have Not, a Second World War adventure romance set on an island in the Caribbean.
The movie featured an immortal line uttered by the precocious Bacall, who said to Bogart, in her sultriest tone: "You don't have to say anything, and you don't have to do anything. Not a thing.
"Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."
Seth MacFarlane, creator of the cartoon Family Guy, tweeted: “Lauren Bacall’s life is a life to be celebrated. I am told her last performance was on Family Guy. For that we are forever honoured and privileged. Thank you, Lauren, for teaching us all how to whistle.”
The MP George Galloway added: “Long will live the memory of Lauren Bacall. You know how to whistle don't you? You just put your lips together and blow. A legend and rebel.”
Hollywood actor James Caan, her co-star in the 1990 horror film Misery, said: “She was a great, uplifting lady who was full of talent and fun. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with her. I will miss her dearly.”
