A man wanted on drug charges after failing to appear in court on March 4th, and identified as 28-year-old Ryan Stone, took state and local authorities on a wild 75-mile high-speed chase in Colorado early on Wednesday morning.
The chase began at around 6 AM on Wednesday morning, when Stone absconded with the vehicle left idling at a Bradley's gas station in Longmont. A Colorado woman had left her four-year-old child in her maroon Ford Edge SUV as she went in to the station to pay for her fuel, according to authorities.
It is unknown why Stone decided to steal the SUV on Wednesday morning, but, on Tuesday night Stone was in a stolen vehicle with his girlfriend when she was stopped by police. It is also unknown why Stone was not arrested for failure to appear at that time.
After stealing the vehicle, Stone sped off to the south on I-25. By now, authorities had been alerted and the police and news helicopters followed Stone's high-speed progress through Longmont's rush-hour traffic. Stone veered through traffic and past vehicles utilizing the shoulder of the highway. Stone would eventually leave that highway, and ended up on I-76 exit ramp where he halted at tan minivan that was traveling on the exit ramp.
The 28-year-old jumped out of the Ford, ran to the van, and pulled the driver as well as another person out of the vehicle, jumped in and sped off. Stone careened the vehicle across a grassy embankment, pulled onto I-76's eastbound Lane and traveled westbound. The four-year-old boy in the Ford was left behind and unharmed.
Now, traveling in the van, Stone had several close calls, almost ramming several cars had on as he dodged stop sticks that police had laid out on the highway. In one case, as Stone dodged stop sticks, he hit and injured an officer at the scene. The officer was seriously injured and taken to a local hospital.
As Stone's high-speed run progressed, he ended up on E-470, where he had minor sideswiping instances with several more cars before striking a guard rail and damaging the van. Minutes later, after losing a tire, Stone crashed the van into a silver sedan.
Stone exited the van, went to the sedan, jerked the vehicle's door open, and pulled the female driver from the vehicle. As the woman lunged for the door, Stone sped off in her car. Stone's flight in this stolen car would be short-lived. About a mile down the highway, as he sped through an intersection near Peoria Street and Lincoln Avenue in Lone Tree south of Denver, he crashed into another vehicle and crippled his getaway ride.
Stone attempted to flee on foot after the crash and an aborted attempt to take control of another vehicle, but came to a chain-link fence that he couldn't get over. As police approached him, he lay down on the ground face down, and was pinned and cuffed by officers.
When arrested, Stone was found to be unarmed, although police report that Stone was seen throwing an unidentified object from the window of one of his getaway vehicles. After his arrest, Stone was taken to a local hospital, where authorities are investigating whether he was high on drugs or intoxicated.
