Michael S Vigil, a former senior US Drug Enforcement Agency official, who was briefed on the operation to capture Guzm￡n, said: ﾓIt would be a massive black eye on the Mexican government if he is able to escape again.ﾔ
Guzm￡n, whose fortune has been estimated at up to $1 billion, was held in the Pacific resort city of Mazatl￡n. He was in a modest $1,200 apartment where he was sleeping with an AK-47 nearby. An unidentified woman and three other people were also in the apartment in a nondescript 10-storey building.
About 25 Mexican Marines entered and took him by surprise without a shot being fired. An American DEA team was also on the ground.
Photographs of the apartment later showed bedclothes and a bag from a cheap supermarket strewn on the floor.
An official quoted by the Mexican newspaper Reforma said Guzm￡n had spent Saturday in shock at his capture. ﾓEl Chapo was out of shape the whole time. He could not believe that we have got him,ﾔ the source said.
Days earlier Mexican Marines had missed Guzm￡n by seconds at his ex-wifeﾒs home in the city of Culiac￡n.
A reinforced steel door slowed their entry and he escaped through a secret trapdoor under a bathtub into the sewers and a system of tunnels that linked to six other houses.
Jess Murillo, the Mexican attorney general said that security forces had so far seized 13 people, 97 large firearms and 36 handguns, two rocket launchers, a grenade launcher, 16 houses and 4 ranches, among other properties.
Analysts warned his arrest would not bring an end to Mexicoﾒs bloody drug wars as other would-be narco-kings seek to fill his shoes and seize business from his Sinaloa cartel.
Arturo Ramos, 35, a builder in Mazatl￡n, said: ﾓWeﾒre worried this will mean war here. Now there will be chaos.ﾔ
