Alexander Legkov finished ahead of two countrymen to win the grueling 50-kilometer cross-country mass start.
That guarantees the host country will top the medals table when the 2014 Games end later Sunday with what is expected to be a spectacular Closing Ceremony.
Russia now has 32 medals, followed by the U.S. with 27 and Norway with 26. The hosts also lead in gold medals with 12 followed by Norway with 11.
The final two events Sunday will be the the 4-man bobsleigh and the gold medal men's hockey game between defending champion Canada and Sweden.
The last chance for the United States to get a medal is in the bobsleigh where Steven Holcomb will pilot the team in his favorite event. A Russian team has a slight lead heading into the final two heats.
Despite strong threats of violence ahead of the Sochi Games, the Olympics have been very safe heading into the final day.
The next Winter Games will take place in South Korea in 2018.
