Photo: Chris Stewart / The Chronicle ACT UP vigil for AIDS patient Jeff Getty. Getty in 1995 became the first person to receive a bone marrow cell transfusion from one species to another. The transplant took place at San Francisco General Hospital using cells taken from a baboon, with the hope that the primate’s natural AIDS resistance would provide a cure. The procedure was unsuccessful, but led to debate over the ethical and medical implications of cross-species transplants. Getty died Oct. 9, 2006.
