President Barack Obama delivers "The Decree" on "The Colbert Report" Monday night.
President Barack Obama appeared on The Colbert Show for the last time Monday night. How'd he do, America? Well...
1) He was timely -- with his jokes and his time.
He walked onstage several minutes early, sitting down behind the host’s desk for a surprise takeover of “The Word” segment.
“Stephen, you’ve taken a lot of shots at my job. I’ve decided I’m going to take a shot at yours,” Obama said. “How hard can this be?”
2) He was funny.
In "The Decree," punctuated by words on the screen, Obama discussed his health care plan and said there are things about it that people from both parties actually like. Up popped the words: “Everything but the Obama.”
The president boasted that nearly 7 million people signed up last year for health insurance and almost 1 million more have signed up in the past few week. (So, half as popular as Grumpy Cat video.)
3) He had a great rapport with the host. (See what we did there?)
The interview began with Colbert comparing the leader of the free world to the four-night-a week comedy show host. “Guys like us understand leadership,” he said, then drilled into the president's handling of the GOP mid-term election takeover, the controversial Keystone pipeline and the contentious immigration issue.
Colbert had a suggestion for the latter two subjects he said “might kill two birds with one keystone.” He suggested the pipeline should end in Mexico with a sign on it that said “mucho jobso,” which would entice border crossers to Canada, a nation that would be too polite to send them back.
“There’s your immigration policy all taken care of,” Colbert said.
The president was not impressed, calling it a ridiculous idea and at one point referring to Colbert, hilariously, as “Bill.”
Colbert also cracked a few jokes at the president's expense. ‘‘You have employed a lot of people — mostly as secretary of defense."
4) He was human.
Obama also revealed that while he loved being president he’s like anyone else at the end of the day and that when he gets home at night there are “no trumpets.” He said his wife and daughters make fun of him. “They tease me merciless for my big ears,” he said.
Reaction to the president's appearance, his third and last with Colbert as the program ends this year, was predictably mixed.
For his part, Colbert thought it was great.
So will Colbert's latest Obama interview get the nearly 9 million views of the interview below that included the questions "What should be do about North Ikea?" and "What country were you rooting for in the Winter Olympics?" Doubtful.
That's right, America. We'll always have Obama ...
"The Colbert Report" ends its run Dec. 18 because Colbert is taking over for retiring David Letterman on the CBS’ “Late Show.”
