BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol and Berkeley police have been making arrests after protests against police killings in Missouri and New York turned violent for a second straight night.
Sunday's protest began peacefully on the University of California, Berkeley, campus but eventually grew rowdy and spilled into Oakland. Activists made their way onto a freeway and blocked traffic.
The highway patrol says officers fired tear gas after protesters targeted them with rocks and bottles and tried to light a patrol vehicle on fire. Police also say explosives were thrown at officers, but there's information about how potent they were.
The unrest was touched off as hundreds of protesters march through downtown Berkeley when someone smashed the window of a Radio Shack. Police say a protester tried to stop the growing vandalism, but he was hit with a hammer.
Protesters began throwing trash cans into streets and lighting garbage on fire, smashing windows on buildings, and looting businesses. There also have been reports of vandalism at City Hall.
