Seahawks Favored to Repeat Super Bowl Title After Lopsided Win - Businessweek

The Seattle Seahawks are the favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions next season, according to the Las Vegas Hotel Superbook.

Two days after beating the Denver Broncos 43-8 in the most lopsided National Football League title game in 21 years, the Seahawks are 9-2 favorites to win the Super Bowl next year in Arizona. The Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning are second at 5-1, followed by the San Francisco 49ers at 6-1 and the New England Patriots at 8-1.

“There is no question, and to me not even debatable, that the Seattle Seahawks are the clear favorites to repeat,” Kevin Bradley, manager at online sportsbook Bovada.lv, said in an e-mail. “Russell Wilson, who will be in his third year, a healthy Percy Harvin, who can help them on many levels, and a stellar defense is a recipe for a team that we may see in or around the Super Bowl for a few years to come.”

Seattle was 13-3 this season with a defense that held its opponents to 273.6 yards and 14.4 point per game, both fewest in the league. The Seahawks outscored their opponents 89-40 in their three postseason games, and forced four turnovers in the win over the Broncos. With an average age of 26.4, it is the youngest team to win a Super Bowl, according to data compiled by Pro Football Reference.

ESPN analyst Tedy Bruschi said Seahawks players may need to accept pay cuts to keep the roster together under the NFL’s salary cap next year. Bruschi was a member of the 2004 Patriots, the last team to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

“There were many players on our team that took financial sacrifices to win again,” said Bruschi, who retired in 2009 after 13 NFL seasons. “Are any of these players willing to do that, to take millions of dollars less? It’s rare to do that because a lot of players nowadays want to break the bank after Super Bowl championships.”

The Seahawks have 15 players due to become unrestricted free agents this offseason, according to OverTheCap.com. They include defensive end Michael Bennett, who had a team high 8 1/2 sacks this season, and Golden Tate, who led the team with 898 yards receiving.

The biggest day before next January for futures bets is typically the 24 hours after the Super Bowl, said Jeff Sherman, assistant manager at the LVH Superbook.

“Everyone that is out here for this Super Bowl ends up making bets on next year before they leave town,” Sherman said, without providing specific figures. “The next time we’ll write this much on Super Bowl futures is when we get to the playoffs next season.”

The Seahawks are the second Super Bowl winner in the past five seasons to open as the favorite the following season, joining the 2011 Green Bay Packers, according to Bovada. The Baltimore Ravens were the fifth-favorite at 12-1 a day after winning last year’s Super Bowl.

About $119.4 million was wagered on the Super Bowl, with sports books making a $19.7 million profit, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Those are the largest figures in Nevada since the agency started tracking Super Bowls in 1992.
