The game was hardly an edge-of-the-seat thriller, but in the end the pull of the Super Bowl was all that mattered: A record 111.5 million viewers watched Fox’s coverage of the Seattle Seahawks’ dismantling of the Denver Broncos, the Nielsen company reported on Monday.


It was the largest audience in American television history, surpassing – just barely — the 111.3 million who watched the Super Bowl two years ago when the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in the last minute, 21-17.


With this year’s result so one-sided, the early expectation had been that the game would fall short of the litany of records set by National Football League title games in preceding years.


But the power of live events seems to have triumphed again: many recent live specials on television have eclipsed previous ratings levels. In the past month, for example, both the Golden Globe Awards and the Grammy Awards showed ratings gains.


In this case, the pull of the big event won out over the lackluster play on the field.
