Five Georgia Southern University Students Die in Crash Near Savannah - NBCNews.com

Five nursing students died and two were injured after a Wednesday morning multi-vehicle crash on a Georgia interstate, officials said.

The accident on Interstate 16 near Savannah involved a total of seven vehicles — three tractor trailers, two pickup trucks, and two cars, state police told NBC affiliate WSAV. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene and another died at the hospital, the station reported.

Georgia Southern University identified the five dead students — all juniors and Georgia residents — as Emily Clark, Morgan Bass, Abbie Deloach, Catherine (McKay) Pittman, and Caitlyn Baggett. Two other students — Brittney McDaniel and Megan Richards — were also injured in the crash. The students were enrolled in the school's nursing program, WSAV reported.

"The loss of any student, especially in a tragic way, is particularly painful. Losing five students is almost incomprehensible," University President Brooks Keel said in a statement.
