The student who pulled out a small handgun and opened fire Friday morning at a school north of Seattle was related to two of the injured victims, a family member said.
The shooter, identified by law enforcement officials as freshman Jaylen Ray Fryberg, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the cafeteria at Marysville Pilchuck High School in Marysville. A female student was killed in the lunchtime shooting and four other victims — two boys and two girls, all under the age of 18 — were being treated at local hospitals Saturday. The two boys, ages 14 and 15, were described as cousins of the shooter by Don Hatch, the grandfather of one of the victims. "They're just three complete buddies, and they couldn't be closer than three brothers," Hatch told TODAY of the two injured boys, who are in intensive care, and the gunman.
Investigators with the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team spent Friday night investigating inside the school, but did not provide a motive for the shooting. More than 100 student witnesses were interviewed, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, and a .40 caliber handgun was recovered. The investigation also revealed that a school employee tried to stop Fryberg, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.
Fellow students have described Fryberg as a "nice guy," who was proud of his Native American heritage and a member of the Tulalip Tribes, as well as the school's wrestling and football teams. He had also recently been crowned freshman homecoming prince.
