HONG KONG: Hong Kong's embattled leader Leung Chun-ying has announced that he will not accede to protester’s demands for him to resign.
However, he has asked his top civil servant to hold talks with protesters.
Leung said this at a press conference held at 11.45pm, 15 minutes before a protester deadline demanding his resignation expired on Thursday.
Protesters had demanded both his resignation and that Beijing rescind its plan to vet his successor, failing which they would storm and occupy government buildings.
Leung said that police would exercise their utmost patience and restraint, and he urged protesters to observe Hong Kong’s Basic Law.
He said that the protests had already seriously affected Hong Kong's economy and government functions and could not be allowed to continue.
