Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden made some news last night when he revealed that he had worked as an undercover “spy” overseas for both the CIA and NSA. At the very end of an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Wednesday afternoon, U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice refuted those claims definitively.
“He’s now saying he was an undercover, clandestine officer working as a highly trained spy for the United States,” Blitzer said of Snowden. “Is that true?”
“No,” Rice replied, succinctly. When asked to expand on what Snowden’s role in the U.S. government was, she said, “Edward Snowden was a contractor working for the NSA and other elements of the intelligence community. Obviously he’s accused of sharing and disclosing, illegally, some of the most sensitive information of the United States government, allegedly.”

“And our strong view is that rather than give television interviews, he ought to come home and have his day in court,” she continued, “where he will be treated with all of the protections and fairness that our judicial system allows.”
Then again, if Snowden was an undercover spy, wouldn’t it be Rice’s duty to protect his cover?
Snowden’s comments came during an excerpt of a longer interview with Brian Williams , which will air Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
